Check out this great shot of the 1951 NIT Champion BYU Cougars men’s basketball team.  Too cool.

  1. Anyone know anything about this picture? I assume it is real but with Photoshop there is no telling.

  2. I’m told the photo is real. Seems legit enough to me. It was reportedly taken in Brazil on a trip that team took.

  3. Cool shot. Looks like it’s included in this book published earlier this year.

  4. If the photo is real why is there a glowing halo block around the words Mormon on each of their jackets? The way the letters “sit” on the fabric is also off…

  5. The sharpness clarity and richness of the black text is also off from the surrounding image.

  6. why is there a glowing halo block around the words Mormon on each of their jackets?

Likely because the letters are not sewn on directly but rather are a nameplate added afterward, and the two fabrics don’t match exactly. This is fairly common in sports.

  7. Also, see this video for members of that team specifically remembering wearing the “Mormon” warm ups: http://youtu.be/fB0L-8nXueY?t=1m30s

  10. Signature Books ran another version of this photo in the book “Zion’s Camp,” although the author identified it as the football team, with a joke figuring Jim McMahon. See also “Hail Mary” and “Miracle Bowl.”
