Blake Ostler Online

September 7, 2007    By: Jacob J @ 11:06 am   Category: Ostler Reading

Blake Ostler has been a big influence on my thinking since I first ran into one of his papers in Dialogue. After that, I started doing searches in BYU library for all the articles I could find. I remember being very excited when I heard he was putting out his first book (which I devoured in one weekend). The chance to discuss his book with him here at the Thang is what got me into blogging.

So, I am happy to pass on his announcement that he has recently put up a website with links to his many works. My searches were clearly not exhaustive, and now I have some reading to do. Thanks Blake!

  1. Surely this is more than a man. Or more than one man. Where does he find the time?!

Thanks for passing along the link.

  4. Blake,

I see a link on there to your comment at mormonstories, but nothing to New Cool Thang. Where’s the love? :)

You need to add links to this and this and this and this.

  5. Major thanks go to all around good guy Kent White who collected the articles and provided a handy dandy way to access them on a web-site and to my son-in-law and former missionary to Milan, Italy (the only true and living mission) Stephan Heilner for making the web-server available. Both are great guys to whom I owe a great debt.

  6. The site is by no means in its final state. I expect that within the next couple of weeks it will be more user friendly and categorized (and pretty!).

I will add links to the posts you provided Jacob, if Blake wants to add a section for blog entries. The main reason I added the response at Mormon Stories is because Blake requested it (we will not let slander stand unanswered!). You will notice there are no additional blog entries to speak of, so I am ambivalent. What say you Blake?

  7. Thanks for the information on Blake’s new website.

My question, however, is when will the third volume of the Exploring Mormon Thought series be out…anyone know? Thanks.

  8. Mike: We have a really good shot at middle October 2007 for volume 3.

  9. Kent,

Thanks for all the work on the website. I have already found some great stuff there.

As to the blog entries, I was just joking about getting some links to this site on there, but in truth it might not be a bad idea. For example, the forth link above was actually a paper Blake prepared but never presented at its intended conference. Of course, do whatever Blake wants and pay no attention to me.

  10. When I found Blake’s site I emailed the link to my brother with one word in the title… “JACKPOT”

Blake, your ideas keep me up at night thinking, thanks. By the way, it was great to see you speak in person at FAIR this year. I really enjoyed the talk.

  11. Thankfully the old site (what, four days old?) is no longer in existence in its prior form. The makeover is complete and a much more extensive and user friendly site will be forthcoming (with multiple pages too!).

Thank you for withholding comments on the “utilitarian” look of the site previously.

After discussion with Blake, we will add a section for substantive blog posts, and I will add them to the overall bibliography soon.

  12. The site is expanded and topical now. I have added one link from New Cool Thang and may add more soon. Any comments or suggestions are welcome.
