Hapless BYU squeaks by even more hapless Wyoming

The good news is BYU football won a game today. The bad news is that BYU is fielding a painfully inept offense still. Baby steps I suppose. I expect the cries to fire offensive coordinator Robert Anae will only get louder.

The good news is quarterback Jake Heaps connected with Luke Ashworth for a touchdown. The bad news is Jake connected with a Wyoming linebacker for a TD as well. He seriously lobbed the ball directly to the Wyoming player. The further bad news is that BYU has tossed a grand total of 4 TD passes through eight games this season placing BYU near last in college football in touchdown passes. Yes, you read that correctly.

But through it all BYU is 3-5 now and if BYU can beat even more hapless UNLV and New Mexico then take down CSU, the Cougs could still get to a bowl game this year. Hard to believe but still true.

  1. wow, previous generations of quarterbacks must be shaking their heads that BYU has only scored 4 touchdowns in eight games.

  2. I really wanted to be a Heaps fan, but homeboy is terrible. Everyone keeps defending him saying he has moments of brilliance. But like they say, you put a monkey at a keyboard and eventually he’ll type a word. Wasn’t that TD Heaps second of the year, only now tying Riley Nelson?

Us going to a bowl game this year would only further show how ridiculous the bowl system is. We go to a bowl because we squeeze by the worst teams on our schedule?

  3. Hehe. Monkey at a keyboard. That is just rude Rusty. (Yes, that was Heaps’ second TD pass).

I haven’t given up on Heaps yet. But he is progressing a little more slowly than I would like. He was off target too often today. I wouldn’t mind seeing Anae go though.

I agree that bowl system is a complete joke. More than 50% of D1A teams go every year. That means you don’t necessarily have to even be in the top 50% to go bowling.

  4. But the team appears to have some real hope for the future, finally.

  5. Heaps appears to have no lack of confidence. During the Utah game the Mtn broadcasters were having a Twitter Q&A and Heaps kept tweeting in to ask questions like, “How many Heismans do you think Heaps will win, 2 or 3?”

  6. Sadly Heaps did look like a deer in headlights quite a bit on Saturday.
