Nice wins by BYU

The football team took down AFA fairly easily today. Utah is next.

Also the men’s basketball team overwhelmed Hawaii last night and moved to 3-0.

  1. In the AFA game the officiating was not merely bad or even merely atrocious, it was beyond incompetent: it was sheer BS. The first TD scored by BYU was called back on a supposed pick play — but it should have defensive holding. The pick call was nonsense.

The worst call I have ever seen, however, was another TD called back for, get this, unsportsmanlike conduct during a play when Max Hall did a walk-off call. This kind of play is common and has been run often. The ref who called it said that Max was being deceptive. Ohhh noooo! Not a team that is trying to keep the whereabouts of the ball hidden from the defense. What is football coming to? These refs make Bozo the clown look like a Ph.D. The MWC is a joke and this kind of officiating makes me what to just turn in my tickets, turn off the TV and laugh at the imbeciles that the MWC has hired to ref these games.

If the game had come down to a last minute play or if these TDs that got called back had been outcome determinative, the refs would have been in mortal danger of their lives. As it is, they only make the MWC look foolish.

  2. Yeah that “intent to deceive” penalty was ludicrous.

That’s quite an indictment of BYU supporters. If all it takes to inflame a (more or less) righteous group of spectators to murderous rage is the outcome of an inconsequential sporting event something is amiss.

  4. Sigh.

  5. Peter,

Just wait and see how this righteous crowd reacts after losing next week to Utah.

I actually think it is a rather well-behaved group in Provo (so, Blake might have been overstating things a bit). I have been to Utah games and I have attended the BYU-Utah game with other Ute fans. While the U has won in all the games I have attended, the other Utah fans have never been much to brag about.

  6. Hehe. Come on Jacob, isn’t obvious that Peter LLC is just pretending to be a humorless twit who doesn’t comprehend the concept of hyperbole in his #3? I thought his comment was an amusing send-up of the goofy BYU haters on the web. (Right Peter?)

  7. Peter LLC: Good try. The concept of hyperbole must have been a challenge for you. For your benefit, let me spell it out:

    hyperbole
    1. an obvious and intentional exaggeration.
    2. an extravagant statement or figure of speech not intended to be taken literally, as “She’s as big as a house.” Cf. litotes. — hyperbolic, adj
    .

I wasn’t overstating the stupidity of the officiating crew. Nevertheless, I did overstate their IQs. They aren’t imbeciles; they are morons.

  8. Blake,

You are as cool as ice.

    BYU ’01 right here, baby.

    Chris,

I’m sure there will be blood.

  9. So – calls for next week? (I actually have tickets!)

It’s going to be a pretty hard game.

  10. Should be a close game. I think Vegas has BYU winning by a touchdown or less. But this one is a toss up I think. If BYU can avoid turnovers and Harvey is healthy I think BYU has a good chance.

  11. Most important games for BYU fans next week:
Nebraska vs. Texas (root for the Huskers)
Illinois vs. Cincinnati (root for the Illini)
