{"id":2200,"date":"2010-06-11T07:46:03","date_gmt":"2010-06-11T14:46:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.newcoolthang.com\/?p=2200"},"modified":"2020-01-09T04:52:30","modified_gmt":"2020-01-09T11:52:30","slug":"survey-results-part-6-atonement-the-popular-vote","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.newcoolthang.com\/index.php\/2010\/06\/survey-results-part-6-atonement-the-popular-vote\/2200\/","title":{"rendered":"Survey Results Part 6- Atonement, the Popular Vote"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Continued from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newcoolthang.com\/index.php\/2010\/06\/survey-results-part-5-gender-studies\/2170\/\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For the full series click <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newcoolthang.com\/index.php\/category\/practices\/survey-results\/\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>So I was a little surprised by this set, though in hind sight, it makes perfect sense.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nI only asked 3 questions regarding the atonement, so I did not really represent the full swath of opinions, but I thought these three would be a good starting point for the Thang.<\/p>\n<p>First, I tried really hard to capture precisely Penal Substitution Theory:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newcoolthang.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/s63.bmp\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.newcoolthang.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/s61.bmp\" alt=\"\" title=\"s61\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2201\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As can be seen, this one is pretty popular among us with 82% in agreement here. <\/p>\n<p>Secondly, I wanted to try and capture the Alma 7 version of things in a non-scriptural way:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newcoolthang.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/s62.bmp\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.newcoolthang.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/s62.bmp\" alt=\"\" title=\"s62\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2203\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Agreement dropped to 69% here, which, while still high, does show people were less comfortable with this idea over penal-substitution.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, I did my best to capture in one sentence the compassionate theory of the atonement as expressed by Blake Ostler:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newcoolthang.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/s63.bmp\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.newcoolthang.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/s63.bmp\" alt=\"\" title=\"s63\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2201\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Yikes, only 9% agreed.<\/p>\n<p>My take away is that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newcoolthang.com\/index.php\/category\/theology\/atonement\/\">we&#8217;ve failed.<\/a> Only kidding.<\/p>\n<p>But seriously, the penal-substitution theory of atonement is pervasive in the church.
