There you have it, today I am sick. It’s one of those head feels like cotton, sinus-throbbing, sneezing, and aching flus. I don’t have a fever though. That doesn’t mean anything because I rarely get fevers. My left leg could be completely covered in gangrene and the ER nurses would still send me home due to lack of fever. In fact, the ER almost missed my appendicitis once because I didn’t have a fever. The nurses said, “Well it can’t be appendicitis because you don’t have a fever. I guess your tummy just hurts. Buh-bye.”

Just as I was leaving another nurse came in and said, “I have a bad feeling about you. I want to check your temperature one more time.” Finally my temperature had shot up and I was immediately admitted and the surgery was performed right before an appendectal explosion.

But I digress. I’m sick and I want my mama.

I do have a confession to make. There have been days when I’ve thought to myself, I wish I were sick today so I can just stay in bed and have my own needs met. It’s pure fantasy. As wonderful as it sounds it only happens when I’m so incredibly sick that I’m not coherent enough to enjoy having my needs met.

Take today, for instance, I got the kids ready for school, walked them to the bus stop, and then came home and got the little ones ready for the day. Then I drove my preschooler to school, went grocery shopping and other sundry errands, dropped a check off at the neighbors, and then picked up the preschooler and headed for home.

At home we had lunch, I discovered I had to return some defective products from the store, and then put the baby down for a nap. Since my husband works from home I then returned the above mentioned items to the store. At this point I had a few moments to sit on the couch and zone out in my achy state.

By this time my school-aged kids came home from school and the regular hullabaloo ensued. I tried to lie down for a little while but was interrupted every two minutes by a small hand patting me on the arm, followed by a question, or a pterodactyl scream to my ear. At this point I gave up all thoughts of preparing dinner and shouted to Geoff that he had better figure out what was for dinner. He then ran to the deli for some sandwiches.

After dinner we got through family home evening and scriptures. My patience was running thin so we put the kids to bed a little early and thankfully the “bedtime dance” was relatively short tonight.

So why did I not go to bed immediately after my little kiddies were put to bed? I honestly don’t know. I guess my achy brain is still wound up and this is my attempt to wind it down.
